Decorate Your Wall with Your Own Circle Painting

Decorate Your Wall with Your Own Circle Painting

Attention home stagers. Do you have a wall to fill with something that adds a layer of interest to a room without becoming a focal point?

Then I have a quick and easy art project thats perfect for you.
This could be the shortest tutorial in my series of DIY art for home staging.

Put paint on bowl rim. Invert bowl on canvas. And there you have a “modern masterpiece.”

A circle is a symbol of continuity and completion. It’s a comforting and at the same time, uplifting image. Sounds to me like something every staged home should have.

In Japanese ink painting, a hand-draw circle executed with one or two brush strokes takes discipline and focus. Similar paintings of a simple, isolated circle and of multiple circles have been done by well-known American and European artists as well.

If you would like to see samples of contemporary circle paintings, here  is a post by Nancy Marcus

Now you can add your name to the list of artists. We’ll cheat a little and do it the easy way.

Circle prints can be small, medium or even gigantic. This medium size print
hangs in the home of designer Meredith Heron.
Russian painter Wassily Kandinskys circle painting from the early 20th century.
Of course, it is handpainted, but you can see the appeal colorful concentric circles have.
 What You Need
  • 1 large bowl
  • Throwaway plastic cup
  • Hot glue gun and glue stick
  • Aluminum foil
  • Small amount of craft paint or leftover house paint
  • 1 primed canvas bigger than the circumference of the bowl
How to Do

Invert the bowl and glue the base of the cup to the base of the bowl. This will be a handle to make lifting the bowl off the printed canvas happen without any oops.

The plastic cup gives you a handle. As an alternative, you can fashion one out of duct tape.
Lay down a sheet of aluminum foil big enough to accommodate the inverted bowl. If you need to overlap two sheets of foil to make it big enough, place a few dabs of hot glue under the top layer of foil to keep the foil layers from shifting.

Invert the bowl onto the foil. Outline the rim of the bowl with craft paint. If using house paint, use a plastic spoon to generously drizzle a line around the bowl’s rim.

I used gold paint. Black is common, but almost any color is fine, depending on your decor.

Heres where the discipline and focus come in handy. You have just one shot at this. No second guessing or slipping.

Have your blank canvas next to your foil and bowl. Look at your canvas and decide where you will make your imprint. Lift the bowl, carefully press the rim onto the canvas, and rotate the bowl a half turn to be sure you have distributed the paint in a circle.

Lift the bowl. You can wash the paint off immediately. Use a hair dryer to heat the glue to remove the disposable cup, being carefully not to burn your fingers on the hot metal bowl. Any glue residue you can remove with acetone (nail polish remover).

Let the canvas dry in a level position to prevent any runs (unless like some artists you want the look of paint runs). Sign your name -- or even a fictitious name -- near the bottom edge of the painting

Finally, hang your handsome new artwork on that blank wall.

Theres hardly any mess with this method of painting. If you recycle a disposable bowl,
you  can discard the bowl with the aluminum foil when youre done.

Your circle wont look like a mechanical rendering, and thats the point. You can make it
more "active" by moving the bowl around a little, or even stamping multiple times.

Its almost impossible to create an ugly circle painting. I made these colorful prints by
dipping two different size glasses in paint. Using glasses, you dont need a handle.

Should You Stage Your Own Home Or Hire a Pro

Should You Stage Your Own Home Or Hire a Pro

An inviting front entrance like this colorful one -- so important
for curb appeal --  is easy to stage by basic staging principles.
So I was reading on this online forum for professional home stagers, when I stumbled across a comment that annoyed me at first and then amused me.

Heres the quote:

“One can certainly tell the difference between real staging and self-staged. The latter range from bad to appalling. Anyone looking at self-staged listings has to look past the fuchsia/avocado green walls and swagged drapes and dark green wall-to-wall carpeting and flowered sofa and chair that dont match -- indeed, they dont match anything in the room.”

That’s pretty harsh. But not true.

I maintain that most homeowners can stage their own homes.

Many of them will need to bring themselves up to speed, but that process can be an enjoyable learning experience. And most certainly a smart financial experience.

It’s no secret that most of us stage our own homes to stretch our budget.

Hiring a professional stager will cost some money, understandably. A trained and accredited stager is an entrepreneur in business to make money, and cranking up and running a home staging business demands capital investment. She’ll have to pay for her training, for furnishings and warehousing, insurance, website, cell phone, laptop, camera, transportation, day laborers, tradespeople, office expenses, and advertising. She has to calculate these costs into the estimate she gives you.

Why Do It Yourself

Besides the obvious economic advantages of staging your own home, let’s look at some other benefits.

Pace. You have the flexibility to do it on your schedule. Unless you have a tight deadline for moving, you can afford to make some mistakes and then fine tune things with time. Perhaps family and friends will give you feedback for what looks best. You’ll be educating your eye. You might even be making purchases for your next home and using them for staging this one.

Safety. Most people have a horror story about movers or other workers in their home. Something was broken or stolen. Private information was taken. Do you know the “helpers” a stager might bring in to move your antiques around? Only you know exactly what you have that is valuable, delicate, or private, and how things are packed, labeled, and stored. Staging your own home could mean no surprises down the road.

Familiarity. If you’ll be living in your home while it is listed, you have an understanding of exactly what you and your family can tolerate in the name of an uncluttered home. It’s unrealistic to stage a playroom all cutesy and expect it to stay that way when you have three boys who prefer the room with wall to wall Legos. Can you keep your countertops free of small appliances? (I can’t!) Put away hair styling equipment and cosmetics every day? You might as well stage your home so you can still function comfortably.

Julie, a reader of this blog, staged her home herself. This is her
dining area. I think she did everything right!

On the Other Hand

A professional brings advantages of her own to the home staging process. Here’s my list of the advantages I see, along with some tips for you if you are considering hiring one.

She’s been schooled as a professional and knows what the market insists on, what the trends are in your area. You should ask to see her credentials and view her portfolio.  You can ask your real estate agent to recommend a stager.

She has the furnishings and manpower necessary for staging. Ask if she pays any furniture rental fees or if you do. How about the cost of tradespeople like an electrician or a plumber?  Ask about the total cost for staging, how it is determined, and how it might vary.

Professional staging can be done relatively quickly. Depending on the extent of the job, the stager will probably be in and out and have you photo-ready in less time than if you had to do everything yourself. Ask how long the work will take. Ask what your responsibilities will be during the project.

A stager has an unbiased viewpoint and can evaluate what should stay and what should go in your home for showings. She’ll see problems and solutions you haven’t thought of because she has the fresh eye.  Do you sense a sympatico with the stager you’re interviewing, so that communications are likely to go smoothly?

Heres the bedroom Julie staged. Would a professional have done better? I dont think so.

You Could Flip a Coin

What’s a homeowner to do when it’s time to sell? It’s possible that a compromise might deliver the best of all worlds.

You could pay for a plan, and do the labor yourself. Many stagers will work as consultants, touring your house and offering suggestions on how best to present it. For a fee that varies according to where you live and how experienced the stager is, she will tour the property completely and then present you with a printed report.  A more casual, more economical arrangement might be a walk-through when you can take notes or record or video what she suggests.

Some stagers will offer an initial consultation and a follow-up visit to make suggestions about finishing touches or tweaks.

A cooperative arrangement like this means that you do the cleaning, the decluttering, and make the necessary trips to Goodwill, the landfill, or storage facility.

Celeste, another blog reader, sent me this photo of the living room she staged herself
after reading my eBook.  Her house sold for close to asking price in two weeks,
and I think it was because she did such a good staging job.
Whether you hire a pro or not depends on --
  • Schedule. How much time you have to do the work yourself.
  • Market. What the competition is like in your local real estate market, how other homes go to market. In larger cities, it’s more likely that staging is expected.
  • Specifics. The price, size, and age of your home. More expensive homes, larger homes, newer homes benefit more from a professional’s touch. Even if you have had your home professionally decorated, a home stager has a different set of priorities than a decorator.
  • Nostalgia. How much emotional detachment you can muster. An outsider will be more objective, and help you understand typical consumer reactions to your décor and belongings. You may adore your cherry red dining room walls, but a stager may see that they make the room look smaller and older.
  • Imagination. How much vision you have. If you’ve never been one to pay much attention to home décor, if you haven’t redecorated in a couple decades, if home improvement bores you, and if you can’t even imagine alternative colors or furniture arrangements for your home, perhaps you need outside advice.
  • Money. How much money you are able and willing to spend on staging. If you are underwater with your home, it’s understandable that investing more money is painful. But an investment is what it is. Done correctly, staging pays for itself, because staged houses sell faster and for more money.
  • Desire. How motivated you are to sell. If you want to sell quickly and move on, staging with a pro can speed things up.
  • Stress. How able you are to cope with stress. Some people seem to thrive on chaos, drama, and deadlines. Others are easily overwhelmed. Even a simple closet cleaning can be stressful for some, while someone else can take a complete kitchen remodel in stride.
Whether you do all your own staging, turn it over to an accredited home stager, or go with some combination, only you can decide.

If you stage your own home and use my eBook, DIY Home Staging Tips to Sell Your Home Fast and for Top Dollar, as a guide, I guarantee your results won’t look anything like the way the online poster described self staging. You’ll be on our way to staging like a pro. I’ll give you your money back if you are not completely satisfied with your purchase.

Avocado walls and swagged drapes, indeed!

Timber Sheds - The Distinct Styles Of Timber Garages

Timber garages are anything of a brand new idea many people, but for people who have lived amongst forests for generations theyve often been used, and to excellent impact. The truth is, from an economic standpoint individuals have always utilised the materials which are at their feet. If you reside in forestland you construct many factors from wood alone, and in case you live within the cities (a lot more not too long ago) you construct buildings from concrete and brick - soon after all, they do final longer than wood.

Sadly, concrete and brick is a lot more high-priced, and there isnt constantly a actual need for it. Truth is, timber buildings reside very a lot in harmony with surrounding nature, they may be fairly cheap to construct, and provided they may be treated, last to get a extended time.

When the majority of us think about timber buildings we think of the traditional shed, a constructing that has frequented several a garden around the world - low cost, trustworthy and very functional. But how would a single go about develop timber garage, effectively what exactly is a large shed?

Creating types

Based on what youd prefer to preserve inside the garage dictates what kind of building style you need to go for. Broadly speaking, it is possible to have a slatted or perhaps a log style. If youre storing something of substantial expense, a auto as an example, you should pick the log style far and beyond the slatted alternative. That is since logs are a whole lot more robust and you want durable strength when it comes to the threat of thieves and bad climate. (Ideally youd truly wish to choose a brick garage in case you have been going to be maintaining a car in there for additional peace of mind, but in case you are restricted by your geographic location a log timber garage may be the way to go)

Blueprints

This can be the foundation in the entire project so you do not need to skimp right here. It surprises me how a lot of folks look for free blueprints when they are investing time and money into something they are going to potentially employing for decades, never fall into that delusional trap - it only wastes your time.

Using the proper blueprints for the project youll be able to make your life infinitely less difficult - the plans will incorporate measured drawings as well as the precise supplies you will need. For a little investment of funds it is possible to make certain that your timber garage stays higher and dry for a lot of years to come.

Make Your Own Abstract Paintings

Make Your Own Abstract Paintings

The art that’s ideal for home staging is the kind of art that blends into the background.

It creates a relaxed, cheerful, confident, buy-me-now kind of mood.

Paintings composed of just soft waves of pale colors strike just the right note.

They’re not paintings of anything specific. They are place holders, and more.

I like to think they create the illusion of mist over a marsh on a day full of promise. Of daydreaming through squinted eyes at the sky as seen from a hammock.

The viewer can bring to the painting whatever he likes.
Of course, there’s a way to DIY these kinds of paintings.

The Steps to Making Your Dreamy Painting

The easiest way to begin is to buy a canvas board already primed and ready for your paint. They come in standard sizes, so it’s possible you can find a frame second hand that will fit. Tip: Buy the frame first, then the canvas.

But you can also buy a stretched canvas, the thick, boxy kind popular now that can go up on the wall without a frame and look perfectly fine. Even Wal-Mart sells them.

Next, you’ll need some paints. Wal-Mart is selling craft paints at two for $1. You can’t beat the price. Craft paints come in way more colors than you’ll ever need, at fair prices. They are easy to work, clean up easily, and dry fast.

You’ll need a pair of latex gloves. And a roll of transparent wrap.

I suggest using two to three colors, plus white, to keep the paintings palette simple.
Squeeze a generous amount of paint onto the canvas, putting each color in a few different places. .
Cover the canvas with sheets of transparent wrap. Use your gloved hands to move the paint
around, blending them in some places and keeping them pure in other spots.
This is how the purple and grey painting looks finished, framed and hung.
When I removed the Saran wrap, I used wads of it to smooth out the paint,
cover all the canvas, and blend some areas by dabbing.
The painting shown at the top of this post started with a canvas I primed grey.
It was already framed snugly with a strip frame, so I taped that off before painting.
I chose two shades of green, plus yellow and white.
I switched over to a heavier pair of gloves, too,
because the paint dabbing at the end of the process gets messy.
Covered with Saran, the painting looked like this. I could see that I wanted to make the
blending more subtle, so thats when the Saran came off and the dabbing began.

I think you will be surprised how some large abstract paintings will give your rooms a much more modern look. They are powerful in their ability to transform the feel of a room. Try it.

Once you frame and hang your dreamy abstracts, no one would ever guess that they are simple, homemade art projects rather than the work of some talented artist. Unless you choose to brag about it.
Don’t forget to download my furniture arranging eBook. It’s just $4.99, and I guarantee your home will look better because you read it.

Wood Shed Plans - 3 Tips To help You Build Your Shed

Finding wood shed plans just isnt hard at all. What may be difficult although, is obtaining plans which can be really useful.

The largest difficulties with most all plans is within the details, or the lack thereof to become much more precise. You see, most do not consist of step-by-step information, or other significant places that you have to know in an effort to permit you to place up your own personal wood shed.

Wood Shed Plans - What To Appear For

1. Do your plans contain a full materials list? This is important due to the fact should you do not know each of the supplies you will need to have for the project you happen to be just going to turn into frustrated.

An excellent set of plans is going to contain a total list of almost everything you will need. Essentially, it ought to permit you to merely hand the list over to the lumber yard to load up. If they do not incorporate a list, look for ones that do.

2. Do your plans inform you what tools you will need in order to effectively build a wood shed? Will you must buy particular tools? This can be essential since you are going to have to figure the fees into your budget.

Once again, in the event the plans youre taking into consideration purchasing usually do not consist of the list of tools you are going to want, appear for ones that do.

3. Do the plans incorporate simple to comply with step-by-step details? Do theyve colorful illustrations of each of the steps? Are all dimensions included?

Believe it or not, Ive noticed countless different wood shed blueprints and designs that consist of fundamentally a rough sketch with no genuine data. Unless youre currently a carpenter or craftsman by trade, youll be lost.

As youll be able to simply see, possessing the right set of plans may be the key to accomplishment. Its going to allow you to create a shed you are able to be proud of and get years of use out of.

Make Your Very Own Garden Planter That Looks Like Stone!

Make Your Very Own Garden Planter That Looks Like Stone!

Why doesnt someone invent a prettier name than "Hypertufa" for these garden containers?

They convincingly resemble stone, but are lightweight and porous.

I love them because they look old and natural, and these are desirable qualities to bring to a garden. Or sometimes, to an interior tablescape.

Plants like sedum love hypertufa.

Hypertufa is made from cement, and usually peat moss, and perlite. You can make these planters in almost any shape you like. Gardeners and crafters most often make them in a trough shape because thats the easiest and most rock-like shape.

Over the years I have made a variety of hypertufa planters. Properly constructed and cured, your planters will last a long time, about 10 years.

Because they are lightweight, you can take them with you to your next home. Meanwhile, they will add some authenticity and charm to even the smallest garden spot you have.

They are perfect for plants that prefer well drained soil, like rock garden alpine plants, cactus, herbs, and succulents.

Please dont be put off by the detailed instructions. Its a lot like making mud pies, but there are some specifics that need attention if you want a vessel that wont fall apart.

You can read my simple directions here, and you can read Marthas instructions, hypertufa forums and other tutorials for making hypertufa planters and ornaments.

 Step 1. Gather Your Materials

?
These are the things you need to make a simple faux-stone planter.
Honestly, the hardest part of working (playing, really) with hypertufa is getting everything you need. Here is the basic, simple, uncomplicated, beginners list.

Portland cement. Do not use concrete or Quickset mixes. Only Portland cement will do. Unfortunately, unless you have a stone mason for a friend who will sell or give you a smaller amount, youll have to purchase the 47-pound bag sold at home improvement or builder supply centers. The cost is nominal -- about six bucks -- but the weight could be a problem. And the bag usually leaks a little, so throw a tarp in your pretty little trunk first. Get help if you are going to hurt yourself lifting this baby.
My hypertufa trough can be used indoors and out.

Peat Moss. Most gardeners have this on hand. Its cheap enough, and you can always use any extra to make your own potting soil for those container plants youll need to improve curb appeal. An 8-quart bag costs about $4.

Perlite. Youll recognize this as the little white beads in your everyday potting soil. An 8-quart bag costs $4.50, and you can use whats leftover for your container plant mix.

Latex or rubber gloves. Use the dishwashing kind that will stand up to the task. Concrete will tear up your skin and nails!

Dust Mask and Safety Goggles or Glasses. Cement is a fine powder that blows around and when it lands on a moist surface (like your lungs or in your nostrils) it reacts chemically. You do not want to breathe cement dust or get it in your eyes. Be safe. Dont take the mask and glasses off until the mixture is wet and thoroughly mixed.

Containers for forms. Collecting these might be your most difficult task for this DIY project. You need two similarly shaped vessels, one slightly smaller than the other. These containers could be cardboard boxes, plastic containers, Styrofoam forms, wooden boxes, or even baskets. Do not use metal containers. Larger projects should have a 2-inch space between the two containers, and smaller projects are fine with a 1-inch space. This space will be the wall of your hypertufa planter.
I used two plastic mixing bowls from a matched set. I added rocks to the bottom so
I could knock them out later for drainage holes.
I weighted the inner bowl with a brick after filling the space with wet mixture.

Release Agent. I use WD-40, but cooking oil spray, silicone spray, or Vaseline will work as well. The release spray makes it easy to separate the mold from your planter once the cement has hardened. .

Garden hand trowel or masons trowel. Youll use this tool to mix the ingredients, and pack the form with the mixture. You may also use it to scrape sharp edges away from the container before it is completely hardened. If you are mixing a large quantity in a wheelbarrow, you may want a hoe as well.

Wire brush. To soften the sharp edges of a partially cured hypertufa trough or pot, youll want a wire brush. Brushing the smooth sides of the container will give it a rough, natural finish rather than a smooth one.

Water, measuring vessel, and mixing bin. The water source doesnt have to be directly next to your work. Youll use your measuring vessel to measure the ingredients. The mixing bin can be a roomy plastic dishpan, a bucket, or a wheelbarrow.

Plastic sheeting. Cut open a plastic garbage bag. Use this to cover your work surface, and then to cover your container while it cures for a day or two. This DIY project can be messy, so wear work clothes and choose an area where you can make a mess temporarily.

Step 2. Mix the ingredients

There are different formulas for what goes into a hypertufa mixture. I used for this tutorial --
  • 1 part cement
  • 1 part peat moss
  • 1 part perlite
If you read other tutorials, youll see that different crafters like different proportions and other additions. For example, vermiculite gives the container some shiny specks, dyes can color the finished product, and reinforcing fiber makes the vessel stronger.

Put on your dust mask and goggles. Measure the cement, the peat moss, and the perlite into the container you are using to make your mixture. I used my wheelbarrow, and I scooped 8 containers of each ingredient. Using the trowel, combine these dry ingredients. Then add an equal amount of water, slowly, mixing well after each addition. Let the mix stand for 10 minutes so the peat moss can absorb the water.
You can see the size of the scoop I used for measuring perlite, peat and cement in
equal portions in a wheelbarrow. The bottom left photo shows the dry mix,
and the bottom right shows the correct wet consistency for a hypertufa mixture.

Use this time to prepare the pairs of containers youll use for molds. I made three containers from my batch for this tutorial, and I used about half the bag of cement. Spray or rub the interior surfaces with release agent. If the material is cardboard, it doesnt need a release agent because you can just tear the cardboard away. Have on hand any shells, leaves, or rocks if you want to add these as design elements.

Step 3. Fill Your Molds

Check the mixture for consistency. It should be wet but not runny, so that it clumps together in your hand, and even allows some water to run out when you squeeze it. If it is drier than cottage cheese, add some water. Fill the containers, packing the mixture into all the corners. Cover the molds entirely with sheet plastic. The plastic seals in the moisture so the cement can cure slowly at an even temperature.
Inside a square plastic bin I used a cardboard box that left a three inch well
all around for the hypertufa mix. I added sea shells to the outter edge,
and I weighted the cardboard box down with a flower pot full of rocks.
You can make a free-form hypertufa container by inverting a cardboard box ,
covering it with plastic, shaping the hypertufa mix over the box,
and wrapping it in the plastic to cure for a day or two.
This is how the three containers I made looked during the first 24-hour curing period.
I used the plastic garbage bag I covered the work surface with, to wrap the vessels,
and weighted it with stones and flower pots.

Step 4. Clean Up, and Cure

Now is the time to wash your tools, before the mixture begins to dry. Rinse your mixing container well and wash your trowel and gloves.

Do not disturb the covered containers for 24 hours, or 36 hours if they are large. Then, wear your gloves when handling the still-uncured cement containers. Uncover them and carefully unmold your creations.

The containers then need to cure for 2 more weeks in the shade. Keep them away from temperature extremes or dry heat. Unfortunately you cannot grow plants in them during this 2-week curing time because the cement is leaching lime as it cures.
The texture of hypertufa can be smooth like polished granite,
or rough like volcanic stone, as above, depending on the mold you choose
and how you finish it before it cures completely.
The top photo shows the three planters I made for this tutorial, plus the mold I used
for the center, smooth one.
The far right container shows the free form approach.
To reveal the shells, I used the wire brush on the square container after unmolding it.
I used the brush to soften the edges, and rough up the texture, too.

Hypertufa containers change color from brown to grey as they cure, and if left outdoors in damp weather may develop a mossy covering. Some gardeners create this growth my introducing moss spores to the surface.

Dont be afraid to move your hypertufa container indoors for use as a base for floral arrangments. Protect your furniture with felt pads underneath the container. Hypertufa wont hold water, but you can use a plastic or glass container inside your planter.

Or make dry arrangements with dry floral foam, the way I did using silk tulips in the photo above.

Out of doors, bulbs and seedlings, and slow growing herbs are happy in hypertufa containers. I forced these allium bulbs in a hupertufa container I made years ago, using a plastic flower pot for a mold.

I hope you will try your hand at making these unique containers.
